There are myriads of tales of various great people, especially in the sports world, who have overcome seemingly impossible obstacles to go on and become champions.  This is because they were taught to never give up but to have the persistence to go on and face their demons, whatever they were.

Persistence is the greatest tool for success.  Many people today find it too easy to quit.  The smallest set back and they are ready to throw in the towel!  Instant gratification has become a buzz word in society today and it is not a good thing.

Young people should be taught from early on in their lives that persistence pays off and to never give up on your dreams and goals.  Do not let failures and disappointments discourage you and drag you down.  Life is full of them and the ability to never never give up and have persistence in achieving your dreams and desires is what you should strive for.

Take a note out of the lives of great sportsmen and women.  Natalie du Toit became an Olympic swimmer despite the fact that she lost a leg at the height of her swimming career.  Did she sit in a corner and cry?  No, she got up and with persistence and motivation, she taught herself to never give up and before long she was standing on a podium in front of thousands of people and a true hero in the eyes of the world.

It is easy to give up.  There are times when you wonder if it is all worth the pain and effort.  Listen to those who have gone before.  Persistence and hope are two crucial ingredients which are needed to never give up on a dream, despite what the world is telling you.

If the heroes of our world had listened to the doctors and physiotherapists and the psychotherapists, they would not have achieved what they did.  Instead, they chose to listen to their own hearts and minds.  Never never give up was the mantra that they used to get themselves through each day.

The difference between a true champion and an ordinary person is all in the mind and not necessarily in their capabilities.  Never give up is the code by which they operate.  Persistence is the key to their success!

You can have an extremely talented person who is capable of achieving the most wondrous results, but if that person lacks persistence and does not have the mental capacity to never give up they will never rise to their full potential. It is all up to us as individuals.  We can have the most fantastic coaches and tireless encouragement, but if we lack the will power to never give up we will fail in our endeavor to reach our goal.

Persistence and the will to go on no matter what is the key ingredient to whether or not we succeed or fail in our quest for the best.

Do not let negative words discourage you and never never give up on your plans and dreams.  Set realistic goals for yourself and take small steps.  This will encourage you to better yourself all the time.  Persistence to push on regardless of the obstacles in your way is an excellent way to make sure that you reach the target you are aiming for.

Do not over extend yourself.  Know what your limitations are and this will also ensure that you don’t stumble and fall.  There will be setbacks. Learn to deal with them in a positive way and use them to build you up and not break you down.  Persistence and the power to never give up are what will get you to the top of your game!

This makes sense, because if you’re doing something in spite of all the difficulty, you’re being strict on yourself.   • Leonardo da Vinci – Da Vinci was a perfectionist who may have had Asperger’s, as he had savant-like skills and an enormous single-minded dedication to art and science.
  • Stephen Hawking – Upon earning his Ph.D., Stephen Hawking became a Research Fellow, later becoming a Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College.
  • Alexander Graham Bell – Bell invented the telephone, but struggled with traditional schooling. It’s believed that he had some form of learning disability, possibly dyslexia.
  • Richard Branson – A billionaire businessman, Branson credits his business intuition and unique perspectives to his early struggles with dyslexia, which affects the way he visualizes words.
  • Cher – Cher is one of the most iconic performers, singers and actresses in the world. She has a form of dyslexia that makes it difficult to remember numbers or to perform basic mathematics.
  • Nelson Rockefeller – Rockefeller served as Vice President of the United States under Gerald Ford. He was severely dyslexic.

  • Nelson Mandela – Nelson Mandela is an African civil rights leader from South Africa who changed the world for the better. His lifelong goal, similar to Martin Luther King, Jr., was to achieve equal rights for non-white people in his country.
  • Oprah Winfrey – She deserves the title of hero through childhood adversity and professional and cultural success she had demonstrated with the qualities of bravery, perseverance and compassion.
  • Winston Churchill – Throughout his life he was repeatedly thrown down by dangerous diseases, but he never succumbed to them.  He was prone to hives, boils, and rashes.
  • Mahatma Gandhi – His initiative and courage brought him to lead India to independence from control by Great Britain. His self-sacrifice brought great success, but his attempts at bringing about peace caused his ultimate sacrifice for his people.
  • Walt Disney – The man who gave us Disney World and Mickey Mouse. His first animation company went bankrupt. He was fired by a news editor because he lacked imagination. Legend has it he was turned down 302 times before he got financing for creating Disney World.
  • Michael Jordan – He’s famous for being cut from his high school basketball team. He turned out to be the greatest basketball player but never let failure deter him.
  • Tim Ferris – The man behind the 4 Hour Workweek, who changed how many people view work and life, was rejected by 26 publishers before one gave him a chance. It’s been on the bestseller’s list for years, sold all over the world, and last year published The 4 Hour Body that went to #1 on the New York Times bestsellers list.

  • Keep things fresh – Ensure that your life doesn’t fall into a stagnant pattern.  A stagnant life pattern will be a stress factor on its own and you’ll need to use extra energy to get out of it.  Try to have a variation of activities in your life and also vary how you do those activities to keep things fresh and interesting.  Fresh thinking will keep enthusiasm going.  You might have become bored with a certain activity, but even looking at that activity from a different angle might make it seem interesting again.
  • Stay focused – If you are always aware of the direction in which you are heading it’s easier to stay enthusiastic about it.  That means you are being focused on your plan.  Focus can help you overcome whichever struggle you might be dealing with and focus will definitely help you reach success.
  • Avoid procrastination – You need to constantly keep moving forward toward your goal.  Procrastinating will cause things to build up and you’d move further from your goal.  Acting on thins as you need to and by not putting them away to do later, will help you persevere.
  • Be flexible – Being flexible, means that you have an open mind to new ideas, and new ways of doing things, as they come along.  This doesn’t mean changing your plan, it just means making small adjustments to help you achieve what you wanted to achieve in the most efficient way possible.  Many successful people were great creative thinkers and that was a big attribute to their success.
  • Don’t stress about the little things – When you have small setbacks it’s important that you see them as little things that you shouldn’t stress about.  The little things will not matter in the long run.  They will not be visible once you’ve reached your end goal.  Just direct your focus back to your plan and you’ll realize that it’s easy to overcome these little annoyances.

HOLLAND’S OPUS – This is a story for anyone who has had to postpone their dreams because life gets in the way.  Glenn Holland is a music teacher frustrated by his lot in life with dreams of becoming a composer but his wife’s pregnancy forces him to give up the dream and become a teacher at the local high school.  Add to this, his son is born deaf and Holland feels he has nothing in common with his child.  The ending of the movie is a testament to the power of pursuing your dreams and the bond that can develop even within adversity between a father and son.   You’ll cheer, you’ll cry and you’ll beg for more.

CINDERELLA MAN – This is one of those great films that grows on you each time you watch it and given the economy today, quite apropos. The story takes place during the Great Depression and follows a fighter who loses everything material and almost his kids due to an injury but through his humility and ability to do what it takes comes back and wins the world’s heavy weight championship.  This film is about love, friendship, humility, sacrifice and never giving up. It is the perfect film for anyone scared because they’re about ready to lose their home or lifestyle and need some inspiration.
