Why you need an attitude of gratitude for success

Motivational Newsletter Fourteenth Edition | Dream it! Plan it! Do it!

We create our own destiny by the thoughts that we think and the resultant actions that we take every day. This creates our destiny in our business- or personal life.

Scientist tells us that we have about 100 000 thoughts in our conscious and sub-conscious minds every day. The average person has about 70% negative and only about 30% positive thoughts daily. These thoughts determine not only your happiness but also your success in your personal- and business life.

You can have a negative mindset in your personal or business life by focusing on:  “I don’t have … ”  or you can have a positive mindset by being grateful for what you do have.

We tend to have a negative mindset that focuses too much on what we do not have. This attitude will make you unhappy and unfulfilled; it can make you feeling a failure. The implication is that it will create negative thoughts and feelings, resulting in negative actions. It is by having thoughts of gratitude and enjoying what we do have, that will unleash a positive mindset with positive energy and positive actions. This is the reason why I totally agree with the following quote from the famous Zig Ziglar. Many years ago, he said: Have an attitude of gratitude.”  He continued saying:  “The more you recognize and express gratitude for the things you have, the more things you will have to express gratitude for.”

The benefits of having a positive mindset and an attitude of gratitude are endless.

The vital question is how to develop it.

  • Become aware of your present attitude. Are you focusing more on what you do not have instead of being grateful for what you do have?
  • Be aware of the benefits in your personal- and business life of developing an attitude of being grateful. Read more about it and develop your own list of how you will be able to benefit from a changed mindset.
  • Realise that no benefit or improvement in your personal or business life can be realised without action, effort and self-discipline. Develop an understanding of what actions to take to reap the benefits of these changes and recognise that the benefits will be greater than the efforts involved in achieving your personal goals.
  • Make a decision and commitment to yourself to take action to change your destiny. Results will only be achieved through self-discipline and your personal commitment.

“You need to know it’s your actions that will make you a good person, not desire.” ― Matthew Quick

  • Keep a daily journal; make lists of what made you grateful during the day. Use the following questions and the list of items to stimulate your thoughts on specific items that you may be grateful for.
    • Answer the question: “I am grateful today for…..”
      • my health?
      • my friend(s)?
      • my family?
      • my job?
      • the mountains?
      • the beautiful nature?
      • my new …….
      • people I met today?
      • somebody special I met?
      • something somebody said?
      • a special event?
      • a compliment you have received or have been able to give to somebody else.

This list can be endless. Develop your own.

Realise that even in the most depressing circumstances you may be experiencing, there are things to be grateful for. Find them; write them down; it will help you to learn that your glass is not half empty, but half full.

Viktor E. Frankl said: “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

You have control of your own destiny. Believe it; there is enough evidence. All you need to do is act. Do it now. Become truly grateful for what you do have, and not discontented with what you do not have. This will have a remarkable positive influence on your personal- and business life. Go for it!!

Some food for thought:

  • Mahatma Gandhi said:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

  • Matthew Quick said: “You need to know it’s your actions that will make you a good person, not desire.”
  • Dallin H. Oaks said: “Desires dictate our priorities, priorities shape our choices, and choices determine our actions.”
  • Steve Maraboli said: “The universe doesn’t give you what you ask for with your thoughts – it gives you what you demand with your actions.”

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Melody Beattie
