  • As a young boy Gandhi was married at the age of thirteen.  Following his father’s death, his family sent him to England to study Law.  Gandhi did not enjoy his studies, but he pushed through and eventually completed his degree.
  • During Gandhi’s studies he became interested in the philosophy of non-violence, using various religious examples to further his understanding.
  • He decided to assist in a lawsuit in South Africa – where his life goal became evident.  This was where he decided – under the apartheid government – that he needed to be part of the journey to the end of oppression of Indians internationally.
  • Gandhi put all of his time and effort into achieving this.  From only intending on staying in South Africa for a year, he stayed for 21 years, and left the country in 1914.  Once the Boer War ended, Gandhi moved his efforts to India, which was under British Rule.  When he returned he was known as a holy man.  This was when he received the name Mahatma – which means “great soul”.
  • Many leaders are remembered for their speeches. This, however, is not the case with Gandhi.  He instead, is remembered for being an amazing listener.  By listening to everyone he encounters, Gandhi has gained respect from people in all walks of life.
  • Gandhi is focused, and humbling.  Being in his presence is a moving experience.  He is a fantastic listener and therefore a fantastic leader.  Gandhi’s influence in freeing Indians from oppression has changed the fate of millions internationally.
