Definition of a Life Coach

The Freelancer Life CoachA life coach can be defined in a few different ways. A Life Coach is someone who helps you reach a goal or make a change in your life.

From Point A to Point B:

A life coach helps you get from where you are in your life now, to where you want to go. Said in another way, their job is to help you get from Point A to Point B in your life.

It is someone who supports you, motivates you, and holds you accountable to achieving your vision for yourself. Whatever it is that you want in your life, they will help you get it.

A life coach helps you:

A life coach helps you to move your life forward and to find fulfillment, success, well-being and happiness. They may also guide you through a life transition, such as finding a new career, or looking to start a new relationship.

You might call them a “change facilitator” or a “courage catalyst”. A life coach is not a therapist. They will focus mostly on looking toward your future, rather than dealing primarily with your past.

  • Empowering: Empower your clients to move ahead and succeed.
  • Intuition: Having a good read on your “gut feelings” and being able to communicate them.
  • Energetic: You have to be energetic because you need high levels of vigor to be able to motivate.
  • Positivism: You as a Life Coach should be positive in your approach, attitude, tone and even writing. It is your positive outlook that spreads to your clients.
  • Creative: You have to come up with a number of new ideas to help your clients. Idea formation plays a major role in the career of a Life Coach.
  • Interested: You are sincerely interested in your clients and their success.
  • Self-Assured: You should be confident enough in yourself to be able to make the coaching conversation “all about the client” …It’s not about you!
  • Thirst for knowledge: There are new things happening every minute and you, as a Life Coach, have to be familiar with the changes around you. Update yourself with research and get familiar with new areas that you may encounter. This is so you can help your client with what he/she prefers to work on.


No formal life coach certification is required to call yourself a life coach; however, there are many benefits and reasons for getting certified. While direct mailing and cold calling are still good ways to market yourself as a consultant, an event that draws attention to you can make a quick name for yourself. The key is making sure that the name is a good one. Schedule a small event that can be easily managed and that encompasses what you have to offer briefly. You can use other marketing materials such as brochures or books as a means to further educate your audience about your abilities.

Step 4:

Offer your services as an expert to a local newspaper or radio station. Life Coach’s can provide the media with an expert source and you get the free publicity that comes with it. Send out press releases to your local media letting them know you are available. They will likely put your information on file and contact you when your help is needed. This has the added benefit of establishing you as an authority on your subject in the eyes of the public.

Step 5:

Become active in your local business community. Work with your local chamber of commerce, network with local businesses and get your name out there as an expert and as a reliable source of help. While this will take time and a good portion of effort, once again, you’re getting your name out there in front of the public and potential clients.
