Finding purpose in your life 10 valuable guidelines

The most important aspect of starting or running any business is for it to finding purpose. There must be a specific need for your products or services to be able to generate revenue and establish a client base. More importantly, since you are self-employed or considering your own business, you (as the brand of the business) should have a specific purpose or belief to be able to drive your business towards success.

If you do not have a specific purpose, we strongly urge you to give attention to this vital aspect of your personal belief structure and motivation for doing business. To assist with the exercise, we have complied 10 valuable guidelines for you to consider.

1. Invest time and money in developing your own skills

Remember you are your own biggest asset. Any asset that is not being developed and grown will disappear. You do have undeveloped skills and talents that can be developed and must be developed to achieve your full potential as a human being and the joy and happiness that you deserve.

2. Making (and learning from your) mistakes is a very valuable learning curve

The only person that does not make mistakes is the person that does nothing. Doing nothing or lack of action is the biggest mistake anybody can make. Do not be afraid of taking action, making decisions and, by implication, making mistakes. Learn from them. The only way to learn in life and gain the wisdom so vital for success is to make mistakes and learn from them.

3. Don’t be afraid of hard work

If you have passion for what you are doing, hard work and persistence is not a burden. Working with passion daily is being considered by some people as being on permanent holiday. If you have stress or do not like what you are doing – find something else. Finding purpose in your life and working on it daily will inspire you. Engage in your passions.

4. Understand your purpose in life

You must have absolute clarity about what you want to achieve in life and why. Realise life is a journey; keep on asking key questions all along your journey. Constant evaluation will make you self-aware and develop or change your personal purpose over time.

You will find true purpose by getting clarity on what you want and believe personally. Some of these questions are:

  • What are my core values and beliefs?
  • What causes are near and dear to my heart?
  • Which goals should I set for myself?
  • What do I want my legacy to be?
  • Why am I here?
  • What do I really, really want in life?
  • Where am I going?
  • If I achieve all my goals, what would it look like?
  • What is my “heart’s desire”?

Do work that you love. Finding purpose will be your driving force in life.

5. Understand and learn to manage your Mindset

A mindset is the attitude we have towards our own abilities, skills, talents, and potential. It is about our attitude towards life and the challenges we are facing in life. Here we will focus on a fixed and growth mindsets.

Having a fixed mindset often implies we have a negative mindset where we see ourselves as the victim of life, e.g. Life owns you a better deal. In most cases a negative attitude towards life means that you do not want to adapt or change.

The person with a growth mindset see opportunities in life, is grateful for life and what he has. The glass is not half empty, it is always half full.

We have to understand our own mindset and be willing to develop a growth mindset and be willing develop it.

6. Accept yourself as you are

Finding purpose in your life 10 valuable guidelines

Take a view of where you are in life and where you want to be. Never compare yourself with other people and see them as happier, having more money, or more talents, or having better luck; by implication being unhappy or feeling that you are being wronged in life.

Accept your own unique talents and skillset. Grow and develop it. You have untapped potential within yourself. See the progress you have or can make in your own “space” in life. Do not be unhappy or feel unfulfilled because you are not the same as the other people, whoever they may be.

Always judge yourself by your own standards.

7. Be grateful and build a strong positive self-image

Start and end every day with gratitude. Of our entire thought process, about 70% tends to be negative every day. Those thoughts must not be your guide in your daily life. Each of us has so much to be grateful about every day. See and experience those things we can be grateful for. We tend miss them. That creates the vacuum for the negative thoughts to control our mind.

Work actively to become more positive by being more grateful. Finding purpose will make this journey easier.

Decide: I will always be grateful and thus have a positive mindset.

8. Your attitude (and not your circumstances) must be you daily guide

You can control your attitude. You cannot control your circumstances daily. You can change your attitude and not your circumstances.

In difficult circumstances, take a few moments to calm your mind and discern what the challenge or problem might be. Take the time to realise that it is an external source, and then make the choice to keep your positive attitude intact. This will develop better self-control and an open mind to keep on doing your job without feeling negative.

Decide: I will manage my attitude every day and my circumstance will not become my destiny. Finding purpose in my life will guide me.

9. Take action, persevere and do not procrastinate

Finding purpose in your life 10 valuable guidelines

Human beings can easily get into a comfort zone. We keep on doing the same things every day. We postpone action as long as possible. We tend not to take action when needed, because tomorrow is another day – not today. Tomorrow then never come, as each next day is another tomorrow.

Be action-orientated. Solve problems today that must be solved today. Do today what must be done today. Optimize the use of your time every day. Work every day to make progress in reaching your purpose in life. Persevere in what YOU believe in, irrespective of the obstacles that you may encounter.

Completing tasks successfully creates a sense of accomplishment, which is a very powerful tool towards feeling you have purpose. No matter the challenge, you can do it!

Every person can develop this attitude. Finding purpose in your life. The choice is yours. Reaching your goals in life is your choice as well.

10. My two favourite quotes on finding purpose is

  • “Problems are only opportunities in working clothes.” Henry J. Kaiser.

The lesson: Never let problems defeat you. Approach them with a positive attitude, find a solution and turn them around by finding a solution. Use the problem to your advantage.

  • “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them”. Albert Einstein

The lesson: We have to adapt and change it is such a vital element of our everyday life. This is an attitude we can, and have to, adopt. True wisdom from a very wise man.

Finding Purpose – conclusion

Finding purpose is a highly personal aspect in each individual’s life. As we go through life, and have experiences along the way, these purposes can be altered or even change dramatically. It is essential to solidify or develop a healthy set of purposes (which includes your ideals, wishes, short and long term targets), and the only way to do this, is to regularly keep yourself in check by asking yourself where you are right now, why you are there, where you are heading, and how you are planning to get there.
